Our Salivary Gland Centre aims to introduce innovative and advanced technologies and techniques for the treatment of salivary gland disorders. The most common disease of the salivary glands are benign tumours and sialolithiasis (salivary gland stones). These conditions require careful specialist treatment, due to their precarious positioning in the middle of the patient’s face and proximity to many parts of the oral-digestive, dental, nervous and respiratory systems.

Treatment

Our treatments include sialendoscopy (endoscopy of the salivary gland), lithotripsy (sound wave therapy) and surgery.

Sialendoscopy (salivary gland endoscopy)

Sialendoscopy is the use of a small semi rigid scope containing a camera to look inside the duct of a salivary gland. Small instruments may also be inserted to remove salivary stones and debris from the gland. Medication can be injected into the gland and the gland tubes can be stretches to increase their size temporarily for treatment purposes. This procedure is done in general anaesthesia. The procedure takes about 30 minutes.

Lithotripsy (sound wave fragmentation)

Lithotripsy is a procedure which utilizes targeted sound waves to fragment glandular stones so that a patient may pass them naturally. The treatment is done in the outpatient clinic. It is an effective treatment modality for salivary stones in the parotid gland. Most patients need 3-5 sessions of around 30 minutes.

Surgery

The goal for surgery of benign tumours is a minimally invasive approach. We have a very low complication rate. Facial nerve palsy is seen in under 2% in patients with surgery for a benign tumour.

Salivary Gland Centre follow up care

Most patients are seen once within two weeks after surgery for a post-operative check-up. The majority of patients do not require a second follow up visit.
