International Patient Journey

Greg’s story

Age: 59

Background: American

Treatment: Polymer-based dissolvable stent (Bioresorbable Vascular Scaffolds) for the treatment of coronary artery disease

Specialism: Intervention cardiology

Choosing Erasmus MC

I was looking for the most advanced treatment for my coronary arteries and also a place that had the most experience. I had some blockage in my coronary arteries, and developed chest pain.

I had a diagnostic angiogram performed in the United States, so I knew what kind of blockages I had. Some issues popped up during the angiogram here in the US, in terms of gaining access to my arteries. Some of the equipment did not work quite as well as I expected, but you might have expected it because the volume of procedures done at that hospital wasn’t that much.

I sought the most advanced treatment that gives you the best results, which is a polymer dissolvable stent(1). I am a believer that you must seek the best care possible and get it done where the volume of patients is large, and the place that did the pioneering work and had the most experience with the dissolvable stent, was Erasmus MC.

Hopes and preparation

I work in the medical field, so my expectations are more like hope, because I know all the things that could possibly go wrong. Even under the best of circumstances, things don’t always go as well as you’d like. So I had hopes that things would go well. My hopes were not only met, but exceeded. Dr. Diletti did very well during the procedure.

The results of the procedure went well beyond what I expected and I’m in perfect health. I came in with chest pain and left without chest pain. The interventional cardiologists of Erasmus MC  were instrumental in proving this technology, and they had 10 years’ experience and volume [of patients]. I’m an extremely satisfied customer. And on top of that, I would have paid any price to have this fixed this way, because you only get one chance to get this right. But it also turned out that the procedure was relatively inexpensive: it cost a fraction of what it would have cost here in the US.

Communication in the hospital

One of my concerns was that I would not be able to communicate as well, because I didn’t know what to expect in terms of the English language, but I was shocked that just about everyone I met spoke better English than most of the people in my country (laughs). At Erasmus MC , the command of the English language was incredible, outstanding. And that made it very easy for me as an English speaking person.

I wanted the best care and that’s what Erasmus MC  provided, along with the most experience in this field, so interventional cardiology at Erasmus MC  is world class.

You know, I had expected some obstacles, but things went flawlessly. I had been to Schiphol Airport in the past many times. But I had not been to Rotterdam, and so I was really surprised by how nicely the transportation worked: the train to Rotterdam, and the relatively short distance to the hospital from the train.

I have already recommended interventional cardiology to several friends and acquaintances, you know, coronary artery disease being a common disease. I’ve told them there’s world class service. Certainly interventional cardiology, and the backup surgical cardiology procedures, I would recommend them very strongly. In fact I think it’s the world’s best, from what I’ve read, and from what I’ve experienced.

It has been 2 years since the procedure. I am again riding road bicycles aggressively and have remained free of chest symptoms.
